The AI R&D Engineer / Lead Engineer is responsible for researching and developing innovative computer vision and AI solutions to address operational challenges in the Public Safety sector. You will explore and experiment with emerging AI technologies, translating research insights into proof-of-concepts and prototypes, and collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams to deliver impactful AI capabilities. Responsibilities • Conduct horizon scanning and landscape studies to identify emerging computer vision and AI technologies relevant to Home Team use-cases. • Review and replicate state-of-the-art solutions from academic publications and open-source repositories, performing rigorous benchmarking against both internal and external solutions. • Drive dataset collection and annotation efforts, and carry out model training and evaluation to validate research directions. • Liaise and collaborate with Institutes of Higher Learning and commercial vendors to explore and co-develop AI solutions. • Collaborate with other departments to integrate research outcomes into relevant operational ecosystems supporting Home Team use-cases and applications. • Translate research findings into proof-of-concepts, prototypes, and demos, communicating insights clearly to stakeholders of varying technical backgrounds across agencies. Requirements • Undergraduate or postgraduate qualification in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or any relevant discipline. • 4 to 5 years of relevant experience, with at least 2 to 3 years of hands-on experience in AI research and application development. • Experience with open-source AI frameworks such as OpenCV, PyTorch, ONNX, TensorRT, and TensorFlow. • Candidates with experience in Vision-AI models or knowledge of large vision models are preferred. • Familiarity with academic research workflows, including replication of published methods, benchmarking, and dataset collection and annotation. • Candidates with experience in publishing research papers in relevant AI or computer vision domains are preferred. • Experience collaborating with Institutes of Higher Learning, commercial vendors, or cross-functional teams in a research or co-development capacity. • Able to work collaboratively with multi-disciplinary and multi-agency teams, and communicate technical concepts and research findings clearly to stakeholders of varying technical backgrounds. • Knowledge of emerging AI-related technologies and trends, with the ability to translate these into practical R&D applications. • Self-motivated, creative, and able to work independently with excellent communication and interpersonal skills. • Able to develop and deploy AI proof-of-concepts and prototypes, with practical experience in cloud environments being an advantage. • Domain knowledge in the Public Safety sector will be an added bonus. • Applicants with more than 5 years of relevant experience will be considered for more senior positions. All new hires are appointed on a two-year contract in the first instance and will be assessed and considered for permanent tenure over time, based on performance.
