Step 2 · The role
Lead SLA’s data governance team and drive the development and implementation of enterprise-wide policies, frameworks and practices to ensure that data is managed securely and effectively as a strategic organisational asset. Responsibilities • Lead the data governance team, set priorities and oversee the delivery of SLA’s data governance workplan and initiatives. • Develop, implement and monitor policies, standards and processes covering the data lifecycle, including data ownership and stewardship, classification, quality, access, sharing, retention, protection and disposal. • Translate Whole-of-Government data management and security requirements into practical organisational controls and operating practices. • Work with business units, data owners, IT, cybersecurity, legal and audit teams to embed data governance requirements into ICT systems, projects, and business processes. • Oversee the management of data incidents, including response coordination, reporting, remediation and follow-up actions to prevent recurrence. • Plan and implement capability-building, engagement and outreach programmes to strengthen data literacy, stewardship and security awareness across SLA. Requirements • Degree in Data or Information Management, Information Systems, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related discipline. • At least five years of relevant experience in data governance, data management, data protection, data security or related areas, preferably with experience leading a team or cross-functional initiatives. • Good understanding of data governance principles and practices, including data stewardship, data quality, classification, sharing, access controls and lifecycle management. • Knowledge of public-sector data governance and security requirements, or experience working in a regulated environment, would be an advantage. • Knowledge of personal data protection requirements and responsible data use. • Understanding of how data policies and controls relate to ICT systems, cloud platforms, cybersecurity, analytics and AI initiatives. • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to balance operational needs, data value, security and compliance considerations. • Strong stakeholder-management and communication skills, including the ability to explain complex requirements clearly and influence stakeholders at different levels. • Resourceful, self-motivated and able to work independently while leading and collaborating effectively across teams.
