Step 2 · The role
At MSE and our family of agencies – PUB, NEA, and SFA – we drive sustainability and resilience initiatives that improve the everyday lives of Singaporeans. As part of the MSE Family, you will be at the forefront of innovation, leading efforts to safeguard water resources, protect public health, and ensure food safety. Through partnerships across sectors, we tackle evolving challenges while fostering an inclusive, safe, and supportive workplace. Join us in shaping Singapore’s sustainable future and making a lasting impact on the everyday lives of generations to come. Environmental public health affects all of us every day – whether we notice it or not. It is a dynamic, multi-disciplinary field that spans across topics such as public hygiene, second-hand smoke exposure, indoor air quality, vector control, and after-death services. As Singapore’s urban and dense setting poses unique challenges to environmental public health, there is a need to push the boundaries of innovative policymaking so that we can harness technology, shape public behaviour, and navigate complex trade-offs to ensure that Singapore remains clean, green, and a liveable home for everyone. You will be part of a team of policy officers overseeing the development of strategies, policies and frameworks to sustain high standards of public cleanliness and reduce second-hand smoke exposure, working closely with NEA and other government agency stakeholders. You may also have the opportunity to be exposed to other environmental public health policy areas such as planning for vector control strategies and after-death facilities and services. Responsibilities The key responsibilities of the team include: a. Formulating and reviewing policies (e.g. public cleanliness, high-rise littering, supporting the cleaning sector, toilet cleanliness, extension of smoking prohibitions) to sustain high levels of public hygiene. b. Drafting and reviewing legislation (e.g. the Environmental Public Health Act, the Smoking (Prohibition in Certain Places) Act) to ensure that our laws and regulations remain current and can meet evolving public expectations and operational needs to safeguard public health. c. Working with stakeholders (e.g. government agencies, researchers) to conduct surveys or studies to gain insight on public hygiene trends and ways to shape behavioural norms to support public health outcomes. d. Working with stakeholders (e.g. government agencies, industry players) to develop and review frameworks that support the cleaning sector to raise service standards, transform, and boost productivity. Requirements 1. Interest in environmental public health issues and related disciplines such as environmental sustainability, environmental technology, and behavioural insights. 2. Comfortable with engaging stakeholders independently to formulate policies and drive implementation. 3. Good analytical and problem-solving skills. 4. Good verbal and written communication skills.
