Step 2 · The role
Energy security is an existential issue for Singapore. With the growing climate imperative, a global energy transition shifting to low-carbon fuels is underway. At the same time, geopolitical pressures are causing significant stresses in energy markets, leading to risks of supply disruptions and significant price volatility. The energy transition will be especially challenging for Singapore, given our scarce natural resources and limited renewable energy options. One of Singapore’s biggest challenges over the next few decades is to secure a low-carbon energy supply that is reliable and cost-competitive. The future of Singapore’s energy landscape depends on our ability to harness four switches – natural gas, solar, electricity imports, and low-carbon solutions such as hydrogen, ammonia and carbon capture and storage. Responsibilities MTI’s Energy and Carbon (E&C) Cluster leads initiatives to reduce emissions and drive the transition to a low-carbon economy, while ensuring energy security and cost-competitiveness, and enabling Singapore to sustain economic growth. Officers in this cluster develop energy and carbon markets, plan energy infrastructure, build Singapore’s capabilities to harness low-carbon energy sources, and manage emission trajectories and carbon budgets. You will collaborate with stakeholders across Government, industry, and international partners to support sustainable economic transformation and green growth through strategic planning, policy analysis, and partnerships. The Low-Carbon Energy division within the E&C Cluster takes the lead in: • Developing, implementing and monitoring various alternative energy sources for Singapore, including solar, hydrogen in its various forms, bioenergy, geothermal energy, as well as other promising low-carbon technologies. • Devising new policies to ensure that new energy solutions can be productively deployed and scaled sufficiently to help meet our 2050 net zero goals. • Overseeing issues relating to energy, grid, storage and carbon transformation Research & Development in Singapore.
