Step 2 · The role
Foreign Service Officers (FSOs) serve as Singapore’s diplomats to safeguard and protect our fellow countrymen and advance Singapore’s interests abroad. As an FSO, you must be prepared for a career that alternates between deployments to MFA HQ and to any of our over 50 embassies, high commissions and consulates around the world. Applicants may pursue a career with MFA as an FSO on either the Political & Economic track, or the Functional & Corporate track. Responsibilities As an FSO (Political & Economic) in HQ, you play a key role in furthering Singapore’s interests in the international community by • Analysing and reporting on global developments in real time, and interpreting their implications on Singapore’s strategic interests • Providing assessments that shape Singapore’s foreign policy decisions • Promoting positive bilateral/multilateral relations through high-level visits and exchanges • Coordinating and deconflicting domestic and foreign policy interests • Presenting and defending Singapore’s position on key geopolitical issues, including bilateral and multilateral negotiations • Cultivating and maintaining close ties with influential people around the world Overseas, you will report on political and economic developments of your host country and serve as the eyes, ears, and voice of Singapore. Requirements To meet the challenges of this role, you must have/be • Singaporean • A keen interest in international affairs • Versatile and adaptable to different environments • Strong analytical skills and conceptual abilities • Excellent written and oral communication skills • Strong ability to engage people at all levels • Good planning and organisation skills • Creative problem-solvers who are able to think on their feet • Open to relocation overseas You will be working in a fast-paced and highly volatile environment that would require the ability to manage multiple priorities and stakeholders at the same time. Graduates (with or without experience) from all disciplines may apply. Salary will commensurate with experience. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. The selection process consists of three successive stages. Stage 1 comprises a series of tests evaluating candidates' analytical and communication abilities. Stage 2 involves a one-day assessment centre, followed by Stage 3, which is a panel interview. Candidates who pass each stage will be notified via email to proceed to the next stage.
